15 Years in the Making – The Ultimate BMW E30

The BMW E30 is a chameleon of the automotive world. Whether you’re after a sleek stance build or a performance monster, it’s the ultimate blank canvas. Proof? Look no further than Joost van de Ven’s masterpiece—a 15-year passion project that epitomizes the E30’s versatility. Spotted at the Tuning Experience during the Essen Motor Show, this car is as much a reflection of Joost’s relentless pursuit of perfection as it is a nod to the enduring appeal of the E30.

Joost’s Instagram is a rolling chronicle of this car’s evolution, showcasing years of tweaks, upgrades, and refinements. While it may look like the culmination of his efforts, Joost himself would likely say this isn’t the end of the journey.

What makes this build so special? Let’s start under the hood. The original engine was swapped out years ago in favor of an M30B35 from an E34—a 3.5-liter inline-six. But Joost didn’t stop there. The engine has been completely rebuilt with CP pistons, oversized valves, and a performance-oriented Z55 camshaft. Custom intake and exhaust manifolds round out the setup.

Fuel delivery has been upgraded to match the engine’s demands, with dual Deatschwerks fuel pumps feeding larger 1300cc injectors. And the cherry on top? A massive Garrett GX42 turbo, the undisputed centerpiece of the engine bay. The result of all this engineering wizardry? A staggering 900+ horsepower.

Joost’s E30 wears an M-Tech 1 body kit, a tasteful nod to its BMW heritage. A carbon splitter and spoiler insert add modern flair without detracting from the car’s timeless lines.

One of the most debated features of the car is the wheels. It currently alternates between two sets: the “old” set of black wheels and a new custom-machined, three-piece 17-inch center-lock setup in a bronze finish. While opinions vary (I personally prefer the classic black wheels), there’s no denying that either set perfectly complements the car’s aggressive stance.

Which set do you prefer?

Handling duties are managed by a bespoke Intrax 1K2 ARC coilover system. The external reservoirs, mounted to the strut brace in the engine bay, are a testament to the car’s track-ready credentials. This suspension isn’t just about looks; it’s engineered for performance, ensuring the car handles as well as it accelerates.

I really need to talk to Joost and arrange a shoot with this car. To better show you all the details and what makes this car so special. Joost are you reading this? 😉
