The Golf Mk2 has always held a special place in my heart. When I first got my driver’s license, the Golf Mk2 GTI was my teenage love, a memory that dates back many years. A lot has changed since then, but the timeless design of the Mk2 remains an undeniable fact.
Even after 30 years, the Mk2 is still a coveted gem among VAG enthusiasts. At Royal Fitment, several were on display, but one Mk2 stood head and shoulders above the rest. Andrew Carter, the proud owner of this standout Mk2, made the journey from England with a few friends to attend the event.
The first thing that catches your eye is its striking red color, but it’s the details that truly impress. The hood was open for a reason: beneath it lies a 2.0 16v engine. Specifically, it’s a 6A engine from an older Audi 80, a popular swap choice due to its affordability and impressive torque and power. This one features ITBs, which no doubt make it a delight to hear at high revs.
The engine sits in a proper shaved and tucked bay, where all unnecessary components have been removed and the wiring neatly tucked away. This includes welding all the holes en smoothing all the panels. Did you notice the absence of the brake booster? It has been relocated to the footwell for that ultimate clean look. Various other components have been shifted to enhance the smoothness of the engine bay.
Moving inside, the interior is where you spend most of your time. Opening the door, you’re greeted by a pair of Recaro seats upholstered in a burlap-like fabric. This fabric theme extends throughout the interior, from the door cards to the parcel shelf. A Momo Mod. 07 steering wheel frames an Ecumaster ADU 5” display, providing all the necessary information. The gearbox is connected to a CAE-Racing shifter.
When it comes to lowering your car, there are two schools of thought. Many cars at Royal Fitment were lowered using air ride, but purists swear by coilovers for achieving the lowest stance. A popular choice here are H&R coilovers, with Ultralow in the Netherlands being a top supplier. The wheel arches are filled with gold painted BBS E50 motorsport wheels in 17”. In the so called zerolip configuration.
